Computer build

Postby pesetas » Wed Jun 30, 2010 7:58 am

I'm going to take a leap of faith in myself and try a computer build. Can you guys take a look at these components and let me know if you see any conflicts? I plan on packing these in my old Gateway mid case since I'm not really into flashing lights and neon...

edit- I should note that I will be using my old Antec 650 watt power supply and my EVGA Nvidia 8800 GT superclocked video card. Hopefully this new mobo and processor will help me realize the true ability of my video card. Eventually I plan on kicking it up to 8 gb ram and beefing up my cards to an SLI configuration.

I was looking over your links there, and I thought this would be a better fit. It's an all in one, and it's sooooo much cheaper.

You could bundle it with one of these if you wanted to keep the same price range

I think we all need to plan a PS3 intervention for Jed!

I think a PS3 revolution would change our whole gaming experience and FDB. Lots of potential on that one machine. But until it has a steam functioning CS:S i'll be on the pc for gaming still.

Nicely played Jed but for me the pc is logistically superior. :UmmmHmm:

Hear hear Pes! I agree. Consoles can be fun and all, but nothing beats a good desktop PC.

Wow...an overwhelming response! :UmmmHmm:
I reckon I'll just go for it. It's too tough trying to play modern games with a single core processor... :DANG:

Considering the situation, this IS an overwhelming response!

I finally got a chance to look at the specs. Looks nearly identical to my wife's PC that I built. Rock solid and blazing fast. I went for the I7 860 myself, but there is little speed differences between the two. I think you will be very happy!! Sorry for the delay - been gone all weekend and just got a free moment to really digest...

I considered the I7 but the budget is holding me back. I have read a lot about overclocking and think I can attain some pretty decent speed with this set up. Thanks for checking it out.

The differences between the 750 and 860 are minimal at best. I think there was a hyperthreading difference and something else, but honestly I have the two machines side by side and they both scream. You would be hard pressed to really see the difference, and even then it would be on complicated mathmatical computations that in real life rarely have an impact on usage.

I5 is pretty decent. If you overclock it make sure you get a case with good airflow as my I5 tends to run hot. Jed add Devildawg556 to psn friends list, I'm on time to time when ever I'm home.

This is an older thread, however you can save money big time by going with AMD Quad core. I just built a system using this mother board:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131618

and this processor:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103704

Right there that saved you almost $200 and my system flys.

I also used 2 WD SATA HDD's that are 320 gigs a piece at a RAID 0 (gives me the 600+ gigs of HDD) and that helps make the system a hell lot faster. (just make sure you have a good back up routine, because if one HDD goes you lose everything). personally I am not worried about back up because I have invested in MOZY online back up (which by the way is a fantastic service).

Thanks Kia. I know it's like Ford v. Chevy but I am an Intel guy. I have started to read up on using solid state drives but that's something I've yet to dabble in.

I wasn't talking about solid state drives, I just meant two of these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822136098

When you set it up with the sata cables, you can run a RAID 0 and get a total of 600 gigs, and it runs much faster.

I started looking at 10000 RPM drives, but was unwilling to spend that much money for such little Hard Drive space.

Yeah I know I just mentioned SSDs as sort of an after thought.

I'm still not convinced though that running two smaller capacity HDs is any better than running one 1.5tb or there abouts. I really don't do much on my machine other than game so I think the 600 gb drive I chose fits my needs. I have to admit that I've seen RAID mentioned several times in articles but I haven't taken the time to read up on it. No time like the present I suppose!

I do appreciate your input!!!

AMD will beat Intel anyday! I used to be an INtel Worshipper but once I tried AMD and switched I will never go back!
